Agriculture and Our Future

I just came across this great 3-minute video which in a nut shell gives us an overview of what the makers call "the other inconvenient truth". It is about how agriculture influences the world we live in in rather negative ways. Watch it before you continue reading!

My WOW-moment was the 7305 Empire State buildings filled with water A DAY needed to grow our crops. I think the video gives a good overview of the problem we are facing with agriculture and the environment. However, as for solutions, I feel it misses one important group of people at the table and that is the consumer, you and me.

How can we contribute? What is our role? Eat less meat and dairy products? Eat more organic or ask for more Genetically Modified food (am certainly not a fan of that but also not well-informed about it, yet)?

As for me, I already base my diet largely on organic vegetables, fruits and wheat-products. I actually hardly eat meat and dairy products anymore besides fish and some cheese from time to time (I mean, I just can't do without a Tomato-Mozzarella salad :-). While I do this in part because I think it is better for the environment, for me, it also has to do with eating healthy. And so, interestingly enough, caring for the environment and eating healthy do not seem to exclude each other.

How do you think we could contribute? Let me know! En je mag ook in het Nederlands commentaar geven :-)

Have a great week!
Rose
